Women’s wear
The Marks & Spencer look for women this autumn revolves around the ’40s, ’80s, Baroque, Warrior Goddess and Cocooning. Prints for the season are distinctive and include ombre and animal print. The new collection showcases lots of sequins, studs, ruffles, twists and lace. The collection is well suited to take one from a regular day to a party in the evening in the same attire!
80s: This contemporary theme revolves around a body conscious look, with a biker twist. Shoulders are big and bold. The fabrics include large dogtooth checks, jersey lurex and leather. Jewel colours predominate, such as cerise, cobalt blue and purple. Belts, bags and shoes come in patent leather, and there are lots of details in buttons, studs and sequins.
Cocooning: This look is all about wrapping up warm and staying cosy as the weather gets colder. There’s lots of texture, with different kinds of knit all worn together with soft colors like grey, cream, silver, purple and beige.
Per Una: With lots of embellishment, texture and color, Per Una this season emphasizes on more contemporary and grown-up fashion. The body conscious look that is so imperative this season is reflected in Per Una, with ruching and pleats that skim the body without being too tight or revealing.
Menswear
The main theme that runs throughout Menswear for autumn ’09 is a return to Britishness. This ties into M&S 125-year anniversary and aims to celebrate everything that is great about the brand.
Blue Harbour has a more heritage feel to it this season. It gives a traditional look and feel, with a colour palette of red, fern green, cobalt blue and light blue, mixed with neutrals. Graphics are big, with stripes in different combinations of colours featuring heavily. Traditional cable knits and rugby shirts provide the backbone of the collection.
Autograph brings a more modern and contemporary look with a richer colour base. Autograph Essentials kicks off with a monochrome and grey base, and then develops into deeper, richer tones including camel, fern green and rich purple.
North Coast: Getting stronger this season North Coast kicks off with a transitional collection called Urban Escape. It focuses on casual dressing with an emphasis on fabrics, soft pigments and soft laundered washes.
Tailoring: British Elegance kicks off the transitional season, and is full of bespoke English elements. The inspiration is London and English life, backed up with the use of traditional fabrics. Classic gold is a mainstay, as well as fresh colours of purple, pink and blue and patterns of checks and ginghams in the shirt and tie combinations. The overall effect is elegant but confident and optimistic.
Stormwear: The stormwear brand was originally developed as a durable water repellent finish on Blue Harbour stretch jeans. At the time of launch it was unique to M&S in the UK. It has grown in strength over the years and is now used on many product areas.
Thermals: The technology used in the thermal range is a Phase Change Material (PCM), which is incorporated into the yarn to provide a truly durable finish. The PCM was originally developed by NASA and is a certified Space Technology. It absorbs excess heat from the body, releasing it again as the body cools, helping to regulate body temperature. On the UK high street, this technology is exclusive to Marks & Spencer.
Lingerie
The autumn collection ’09 offers several lines of lingerie including the Limited Collection that has a fabulous range of lace vests and knickers in fluorescent colors of lime, lemon and tangerine. Autograph weekend sleep wear is a new range this season.
Limited Collection: The most popular products of this collection are the micro fibre low plunge bra and matching knickers. The colourways are updated, and include a fun and flirty purple with grey/blue spots and purple animal print. There is also a fabulous range of lace vests and knickers in fluorescent colours of lime, lemon and tangerine.
Autograph Weekend Sleepwear: This season sees the introduction of a new sleepwear range from Autograph Weekend. This is a gently luxurious range, focusing on simple shapes and soft modal fabrics. It includes pyjamas in soft greys and charcoals, stripes and checks.
Hosiery: Hosiery taps into current trends in colour and design. There are stripes, spots and a rainbow of colours. The look starts off as casual and becomes more party-orientated towards Christmas, with the addition of lurex.
Children’s wear
Marks & Spencer’s children’s wear range has two main themes for this season - country kitchen / heritage and the ‘80s. The trends seen this autumn are dogtooth checks, cable knits, wool coats, faux fur, studs and sequins, rugby shirts etc.
Home Decor
The spirit of the ’80s that permeates fashion this season also features strongly in the Home collection. The two main themes for home this season include Indian Summer comprising of spicy hues and decorative finishes and Nature inspired by the lush greens and earthy neutrals of the forest. Rich shades of red and purple dominate this season’s coloured glassware range and are perfect for the upcoming festive season
